Name: Stelis vulcani Rchb.f.
Etymology: vulcani means “of the volcano” and refers to the montane habitats of this species.
First description: 1878 by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach.
Origin/Distribution: The species is distributed throughout the northern Andes.
Location/Habitat: We cultivate Stelis vulcani cool at approximately 10–19 °C, with high humidity, shaded to bright filtered light, and good continuous air movement. The fine, airy substrate should be kept consistently slightly moist.
Description and notes: This compact highland orchid forms leathery leaves and upright inflorescences densely covered with small flowers. It tolerates prolonged heat much worse than cool, humid conditions. Especially in summer, we ensure good air movement and low night temperatures.
