Description

Rossioglossum Surprise in vitro pollination

Name: Rossioglossum Surprise
Etymology:
“Surprise” is our provisional name for this plant, as unfortunately we have lost the original cross label.
Origin / Distribution:
Rossioglossum Surprise is a cultivated hybrid. We know that Rossioglossum grande is the seed parent, but unfortunately the second parent could no longer be identified.
Location / Habitat:
Rossioglossum grande, which we know to be the seed parent, is native to Mexico and Guatemala, where it grows in moist mountain forests. We keep our hybrid in bright, well-ventilated conditions and at rather moderate temperatures.
Description & Notes:
We know the seed parent of Rossioglossum Surprise to be Rossioglossum grande, while the second parent remains unknown because the cross label was lost. The plant has robust pseudobulbs and elongated leaves, and produces large, striking flowers.

We grow it in bright, well-ventilated conditions and at rather moderate temperatures. During active growth, we water regularly, while ensuring that excess water can drain away quickly. Once the pseudobulbs have matured, we keep the plant somewhat drier to encourage flowering.

In vitro culture: You will receive a flask containing 4 young plants. The plants are generally large enough to be removed from the flask. After opening, carefully rinse all the nutrient medium from the roots with lukewarm water, then pot the young plants in fine, airy bark with a slightly moisture-retentive component. For the first few weeks, we recommend high humidity, cool to intermediate conditions, and bright but sheltered light with good air circulation. Keep evenly slightly moist and avoid heat and waterlogging.
