Name: Rhaphidophora tetrasperma Hook.f. ‘Variegata’
Etymology: The genus name Rhaphidophora refers to the needle-like structures in the plant tissues. The specific epithet tetrasperma means “four-seeded.”
Origin/Distribution: The species is native to the Malay Peninsula; ‘Variegata’ is a variegated cultivar.
Location/Growing Conditions: We grow the plant in warm conditions at around 20–28°C, with high humidity and bright, indirect light. It grows best on a climbing support in coarse, highly aerated aroid substrate. The surface may dry out slightly between waterings.
Description and Notes: This fast-climbing species develops characteristically deeply incised leaves as it matures. ‘Variegata’ also develops irregular light to cream-colored patches. The variegation varies from leaf to leaf; very light areas of the leaves should be protected from intense direct sunlight.
