Name: Porroglossum muscosum (Rchb.f.) Schltr.
Synonyms: Masdevallia muscosa Rchb.f.; Porroglossum xipheres (Rchb.f.) Garay
Etymology: The genus name Porroglossum refers to the elongated shape of the mobile lip. The Latin muscosum means “mossy” or “moss-dwelling”.
Origin/Distribution: Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic on mossy branches in moist montane forests, at elevations of approximately 1,600 to 3,000 m. The species requires cool to cool-intermediate temperatures of approximately 10–21 °C, high humidity, filtered light and continuous gentle air movement.
Description and Notes: Porroglossum muscosum is a compact Pleurothallidinae with long, upright flower spikes. Single flowers appear successively at their tips; the delicate lip may fold inward when touched. We keep the very fine, airy medium evenly moist throughout the year, but avoid waterlogging. Low-calcium water and protection from summer heat are particularly important for cultivation.
