Description

Platystele misasiana

Name: Platystele misasiana P.Ortiz

Etymology: The genus name Platystele refers to the short, broad column of the flower; misasiana honors the Colombian orchid expert Guillermo Misas Urreta.

First described: 1981 by Pedro Ortiz Valdivieso.

Origin/Distribution: The species is native to Colombia.

Location/Habitat: It grows epiphytically on mossy branches in moist mountain and cloud forests. We cultivate it in cool to intermediate conditions at around 12–21 °C, with very high humidity, bright filtered light, and continuous gentle air movement.

Description and notes: This miniature orchid forms dense clumps and delicate inflorescences with numerous tiny flowers. It is ideal for a moist terrarium. We keep the fine roots constantly slightly moist and never allow them to dry out completely.
