Description

Phragmipedium besseae

Name: Phragmipedium besseae Dodson & J.Kuhn

Synonyms: Paphiopedilum besseae Dodson & J.Kuhn

Etymology: The genus name Phragmipedium is derived from Greek and refers to the segmented, slipper-shaped lip; besseae honors Elizabeth Locke Besse.

First description: In 1981 by Calaway H. Dodson and J. Kuhn.

Origin/Distribution: The species is native to Ecuador and Peru.

Location/Habitat: It grows terrestrially or lithophytically in perpetually moist, often mossy locations. We cultivate it under intermediate conditions at around 15–25 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and good air circulation.

Description and Notes: Phragmipedium besseae is known for its exceptionally vivid red to orange-red flowers, which may appear successively on an inflorescence. We keep the airy, moisture-retentive substrate evenly moist and never let the roots dry out completely.
