Name: Phragmipedium Alex Portilla
Parents: Phragmipedium Carol Kanzer × Phragmipedium humboldtii
Registration: Grex registered in the RHS International Orchid Register; registered in 2021 by Ecuagenera.
Etymology: The genus name Phragmipedium combines Greek word elements meaning “partition” and “slipper,” referring to the distinctive structure of the flower. The grex name Alex Portilla honors Alex Portilla of Ecuagenera.
Location/Growing conditions: We recommend bright, filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation. Intermediate conditions of about 15–26 °C during the day and 11–19 °C at night are ideal. The potting medium should be airy and structurally stable while retaining consistent moisture; avoid allowing it to dry out completely.
Description and notes: This hybrid combines the influence of Phragmipedium Carol Kanzer with the long, elegant floral segments of P. humboldtii. Seedlings may vary in color, shape, and petal length. We use soft water whenever possible and fertilize regularly at a low concentration during active growth. A pronounced dry rest period is not required.
