Name: Phragmipedium Alae Animae
Etymology: “Alae Animae” means “Wings of the Soul” and refers to the strikingly long, curved petals.
First description: Registered by Ecuagenera as a hybrid in 2025; a cross between Phragmipedium caudatum × Phragmipedium anguloi.
Origin / Distribution: An artificially created hybrid with no natural range.
Location / Habitat: The parent species originate from the moist mountain regions of South America. For cultivation, the hybrid prefers airy, moist conditions with good air circulation.
Description & Notes: Phragmipedium Alae Animae combines the exceptionally long, elegantly drooping petals of Phragmipedium caudatum with the robustly formed flower body and pronounced spur of Phragmipedium anguloi. This gives the flowers a large, striking, and highly distinctive appearance. We cultivate it at moderate temperatures of approximately 17–24°C during the day and 12–16°C at night, with high humidity and consistently moist roots. Like many Phragmipediums, it cannot tolerate prolonged drying out.
