Description

Phalaenopsis violacea var. Mentawei OP in vitro

Name: Phalaenopsis violacea var. Mentawei

Origin / Habitat: Phalaenopsis violacea originates from the warm, humid regions of Southeast Asia and grows epiphytically in warm, humid forest areas. The name Mentawei refers to material from the Mentawai Islands of Indonesia.

Description & Flowers: A compact botanical Phalaenopsis, prized for its waxy, intensely colored, and pleasantly scented flowers. The flower spikes can develop additional buds over a long period and should therefore not be removed prematurely.

Light: Bright to partial shade, without direct, intense midday sun.

Temperature: Warm, ideally around 22–29 °C; avoid persistently cool conditions.

Water & Humidity: Keep consistently lightly moist, avoiding waterlogging and persistently wet roots. High humidity and good air circulation are important.

Substrate: Fine to medium, airy bark with a small moisture-retaining component.

In vitro culture: You will receive a bottle containing 4 young plants. The plants are usually already large enough to be potted out. After opening, we thoroughly rinse the nutrient medium from the roots with lukewarm water and pot the young plants in fine bark with some sphagnum moss. During the first few weeks, we recommend around 23–28 °C, high humidity, gentle air circulation, and bright, indirect light. The substrate should remain lightly moist but never wet; water should not sit in the heart of the young plants for extended periods. They are then gradually acclimated to normal growing conditions.
