Description

Lepanthes pretiosa OP in vitro

Name: Lepanthes pretiosa Luer & Hirtz
Etymology: pretiosa = precious, valuable, or beautiful (Latin); refers to the exceptionally charming appearance of this miniature orchid and its delicately patterned leaves.
First described: In 2009 by Carlyle August Luer and Alexander Charles Hirtz.
Origin / Distribution: Endemic to western Ecuador.
Location / Habitat: Grows epiphytically in very humid lowland to lower montane rainforests of the Pacific lowlands at elevations of around 400 meters. After deflasking, it requires shaded to partially shaded conditions (no direct sunlight), consistently high humidity of 75–85%, warm to intermediate temperatures, and continuous, gentle air circulation.
Description & Notes: Lepanthes pretiosa belongs to a fascinating group of lowland species within the genus, distinguished by spectacularly patterned leaves. The rounded to broadly elliptical leaves have a bright green base color with deep reddish-brown, net-like veining (reticulation). The tiny, delicate flowers appear continuously on the upper surface of the leaves. Due to its lowland origins in warm, humid habitats, it requires consistent warmth and high humidity, making it ideally suited to cultivation in terrariums, rainforest display cases, or bottle gardens.

In vitro culture: You will receive a flask containing 4 young plants. The plants are generally already large enough to be deflasked. After opening, remove the culture medium from the very fine roots with particular care using lukewarm water, then place the young plants on moist sphagnum or in a very fine, airy substrate that retains a little moisture. For the first few weeks, we recommend very high humidity, warm to intermediate conditions, sheltered light, and gentle air movement. Keep consistently slightly moist and avoid both drying out and overheating.
