Description

Lepanthes lucifer

Name: Lepanthes lucifer Luer & Hirtz

Etymology: The genus name Lepanthes is derived from the Greek lepis ("scale") and anthos ("flower"). The epithet lucifer means "light-bringer" and refers to the striking flower markings.

First description: The species was described in 1987 by Carlyle A. Luer and Henry Hirtz.

Origin / Habitat: Ecuador, on the western slopes of the Andes in the Imbabura Province at approximately 1,200–1,500 m. It grows epiphytically in moist montane forests.

Description & Care: Miniature orchid with slender stems and a single elliptical leaf. The red flowers appear sequentially on short, dense inflorescences; inside are two striking, horn-like floral parts. The flowers are approximately 1 cm in size. We grow it in bright to shaded conditions, with high humidity, good air circulation, and consistent moisture. We keep it at approximately 15–27 °C.
