Description

Dracula dalstroemii

Name: Dracula dalstroemii Luer

Etymology: Dracula means "little dragon." The specific epithet honors the Swedish botanist and orchid researcher Stig Dalström.

First described: 1984 by Carlyle A. Luer.

Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.

Habitat: Epiphytic on wet, mossy trees in moist montane and cloud forests, at approximately 2,000–2,600 m elevation. The species prefers cool conditions around 8–18 °C, high humidity, shaded light, and constant air movement.

Description and notes: The large flowers have long sepal tails and appear sequentially, up to three per flower spike. Since the spikes can grow upright, laterally, or pendulously, an open basket is suitable. The fine, airy substrate should be kept consistently moist; avoid heat and complete drying out.
