Description

Cercestis mirabilis

Name: Cercestis mirabilis (N.E.Br.) Bogner

Etymology: The specific epithet mirabilis means “wonderful” or “extraordinary”.

Origin/Distribution: Tropical Africa.

Location/Habitat: Climbing in warm, humid tropical forests. We cultivate the species at approximately 21–29 °C, with high humidity and bright to partially shaded conditions. A climbing support and coarse, humus-rich substrate promote growth.

Description and Notes: Young plants show striking light-colored leaf variegation. As they mature, the leaf shape changes significantly; the variegation may become less pronounced, and mature leaves may appear more deeply lobed.
