Name: Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann ‘Buckleberry’ AM/RHS
Parents: Bulbophyllum longissimum × Bulbophyllum rothschildianum
Registration: Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann was registered with the RHS in 1969; J. Chambers is listed as the registrant and Stuart Low as the originator. ‘Buckleberry’ is an excellent cultivated form of the grex.
Etymology: The genus name Bulbophyllum derives from the Greek bolbos (“bulb”) and phyllon (“leaf”), referring to the leaf-bearing pseudobulbs. Elizabeth Ann is the grex name, and ‘Buckleberry’ is the clonal name.
Location/Growing conditions: We grow this hybrid in bright to lightly shaded conditions, with high humidity, good air circulation, and warm temperatures of around 20–30 °C. The potting medium should be very airy and remain evenly slightly moist during active growth. Because of its creeping rhizome, wide, shallow pots or baskets are particularly suitable.
Description and notes: Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann ‘Buckleberry’ is a striking hybrid with a creeping rhizome, single leaves on the pseudobulbs, and spectacular inflorescences. The long, slender, tapered sepals create a striking, almost thread-like silhouette. The combination of its two botanical parents gives it its characteristic spreading flower form and makes this clone a well-known representative of the Bulbophyllum hybrids.
