Description

Bulbophyllum bolsteri

Name: Bulbophyllum bolsteri Ames
Etymology: bolsteri = in honor of Richard C. Bolster, an American plant collector who discovered the species in the Philippines in the early 20th century.

First description: 1912 by Oakes Ames in the “Philippine Journal of Science.”
Origin / Distribution: Philippines (endemic to the island of Mindanao).
Location / Habitat: An epiphyte growing in lowland and montane forests at elevations from sea level to about 1,000 m. The species grows on tree trunks in shady, humid areas.
Description & Notes: Bulbophyllum bolsteri is a delicate miniature orchid with a creeping rhizome and closely spaced, cylindrical to narrowly ovoid pseudobulbs. Each pseudobulb bears a single leathery, elliptic-lanceolate leaf. The slender inflorescence is about 8 to 12 cm long and bears a single flower (about 1.2 cm across). The flowers are typically yellowish to cream-colored, with distinctive purplish-red stripes or spots on the sepals and a movable, darker lip.

In cultivation, the species prefers intermediate to warm temperatures and consistently high humidity. Due to its creeping growth habit, mounting it on bark (cork) or tree fern plaques with a layer of sphagnum moss is recommended. The medium should be kept evenly moist, and good air circulation is essential to prevent rhizome rot. A slight reduction in watering during winter is advisable, but the plant should not be allowed to dry out completely.
