Name: Philodendron squamicaule Croat & Grayum ‘Pink’
Etymology: The genus name is formed from the Greek words “phílos” (friend) and “déndron” (tree). The specific epithet means roughly “with a scaly stem” and refers to the conspicuously scaly petioles and shoots.
Origin/Distribution: From southern Central America to northwestern South America.
Location/Habitat: A climbing aroid from humid tropical forests, often at low to mid elevations. In cultivation, it thrives in a warm location at about 19–28 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and good air circulation.
Description and Notes: Its distinctive features are the densely reddish-scaled petioles and robust, heart-shaped leaves. The ‘Pink’ selection displays particularly attractive pink to reddish tones on new growth. A climbing support encourages larger leaves. We recommend a coarse, very airy substrate and consistently light moisture without waterlogging.
