Description

Philodendron giganteum

Name: Philodendron giganteum Schott

Etymology: The specific epithet giganteum means “gigantic” and refers to the exceptional size of mature plants.

Origin/Distribution: The Caribbean and northern South America.

Location/Habitat: Terrestrial, hemiepiphytic, or epiphytic in warm, humid lowland forests. We grow this species in warm conditions at around 21–29 °C, with high humidity and bright, indirect light. We keep the coarse, humus-rich aroid mix evenly and slightly moist.

Description and Notes: Philodendron giganteum develops very large, heart- to arrow-shaped leaves and a sturdy, relatively compact growth habit with short internodes. Given sufficient space, warmth, and nutrients, this species can reach impressive dimensions.
