Name: Philodendron ernestii Engl. ‘Red’
Etymology: The specific epithet ernestii honors the German botanist Ernst Heinrich Georg Ule. ‘Red’ refers to the reddish coloration of the young plant parts of this cultivar.
First described: 1905 by Adolf Engler.
Origin/Distribution: Tropical South America, including Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
Location/Habitat: Semi-epiphytic climber in warm, moist lowland forests. We recommend approximately 20–29 °C, high humidity, good air circulation, and bright, indirect light.
Description and Notes: The species develops sturdy petioles and large, elongated to heart-shaped leaves. In ‘Red’, new growth and petioles show pronounced reddish tones. A sturdy support helps hold up larger, mature leaves. Keep a coarse, slightly moisture-retaining aroid potting mix evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
