Philodendron brandtianum

Name: Philodendron brandtianum K.Krause

Etymology: The species epithet brandtianum honors Johann Friedrich von Brandt, a 19th-century German naturalist.

Origin/Distribution: Tropical South America.

Site/Habitat: Climbing to hemiepiphytic in warm, humid tropical forests. We cultivate the species in warm conditions at about 20–28 °C, with high humidity and bright, indirect light. A climbing support and coarse, airy aroid substrate encourage larger leaves.

Description and Notes: Philodendron brandtianum is particularly known for its attractive silvery-gray markings against a green background. The contrast is often especially pronounced on young leaves. We keep the substrate evenly and slightly moist, without allowing the root zone to remain waterlogged.
