Description

Zootrophion atropurpureum (5 cm pot)

Name: Zootrophion atropurpureum

Etymology: The genus name Zootrophion was formed from Greek word elements and refers to the unusual, animal-like appearance of the flowers. The Latin specific epithet atropurpureum means “dark purple” and refers to the intense, deep color of the flowers.

Origin/Distribution: Tropical South America.

Location/Habitat: This species grows epiphytically in moist montane to cloud forests. We recommend partial shade to bright, indirect light, high humidity, and continuous air movement. Cool to intermediate conditions of approximately 12–24 °C during the day and 8–17 °C at night are favorable. The fine roots should be kept evenly and lightly moist.

Description and Notes: Zootrophion atropurpureum is a compact Pleurothallidinae orchid with leathery leaves and unusual dark purple flowers. The sepals remain largely fused, creating the genus’s characteristic tubular to cage-like flower shape. We grow this species in a fine, airy orchid mix that retains a little moisture. We use soft water whenever possible, avoid letting the plant dry out completely for extended periods, and ensure good air movement in conditions of high humidity.
