Name: Vanda falcata (Thunb.) Beer
Synonyms: Limodorum falcatum Thunb.; Neofinetia falcata (Thunb.) Hu
Etymology: The genus name Vanda derives from a South Asian name for an orchid; falcata means “sickle-shaped” and describes the slightly curved leaves.
Origin/Distribution: East Asia, particularly Japan, Korea, and parts of China.
Habitat: A compact epiphyte or occasional lithophyte of bright, airy forests. In summer, provide bright, warm to intermediate conditions and water regularly; in winter, grow it in cooler conditions at around 10–16 °C and keep it somewhat drier. The roots require excellent aeration.
Description and Notes: Vanda falcata, traditionally also known as Fūran or Neofinetia falcata, forms short monopodial shoots with two-ranked, firm leaves. Its delicate white flowers have a long spur and are especially fragrant in the evening and at night. It can be grown mounted, in airy baskets, or on traditional moss mounds; avoid waterlogging.
