Name: Vanda brunnea Rchb.f.
Etymology: The genus name Vanda derives from a South Asian term for orchids; brunnea means “brown” and refers to the flowers’ warm brown coloration.
Origin/Distribution: Southwestern China and parts of mainland Southeast Asia.
Site/Habitat: A monopodial epiphyte of humid forests and forest margins. Grow in bright to partially shaded conditions, with high humidity and steady air movement. The exposed roots need frequent watering, but must be able to dry quickly afterward. Temperatures of around 16–28 °C are suitable.
Description and Notes: Vanda brunnea has narrow, strap-shaped leaves and produces inflorescences with several brown to olive-colored flowers and a contrasting lip. Growing it in an airy basket or very coarse medium suits its root type. In the darker winter months, reduce watering and fertilizing without allowing the roots to dry out for extended periods.
