Description

Trichopilia tortilis

Name: Trichopilia tortilis Lindl.

Etymology: The genus name Trichopilia refers to features of the flower column; tortilis means “twisted” or “coiled” and refers to the noticeably twisted floral segments.

Origin/Distribution: Mexico and Central America.

Location/Habitat: We cultivate this species in intermediate conditions at about 13–25 °C, with high humidity, filtered light, and good air circulation. During the growth period, we keep the roots consistently slightly moist.

Description and Notes: The large flowers have strongly wavy and twisted sepals and petals as well as a broad, trumpet-shaped lip. An airy, well-draining orchid substrate is well-suited. After the shoots have matured, we reduce watering somewhat.
