Name: Stanhopea whittenii
Etymology: The genus name Stanhopea honors Philip Henry Stanhope, 4th Earl Stanhope. The specific epithet whittenii is an honorific name commemorating a botanist associated with the study of the Stanhopeinae.
Origin/Distribution: Tropical America.
Location/Habitat: This species grows epiphytically in humid forests. We recommend bright, filtered light, high humidity, and very good air circulation. Temperate conditions of approximately 16–26 °C during the day and 11–18 °C at night are favorable. The growing medium should be kept regularly moist during growth while remaining very airy.
Description and Notes: Stanhopea whittenii produces pseudobulbs with large, pleated leaves and develops the downward-facing inflorescences typical of the genus. Its complex flowers are striking and can produce an intense fragrance. We grow this species in an open mesh or hanging pot with a coarse, well-aerated medium that retains a little moisture. During active growth, we water and fertilize regularly; once the new pseudobulbs have matured, we reduce watering somewhat.
