Name: Stanhopea tigrina
Description & Notes: An impressive Stanhopea species from Mexico with large, boldly marked, and intensely fragrant flowers. The flower spikes grow downwards through the substrate, which is why we best cultivate the plant in an open orchid basket or a very well-draining hanging basket. Although the individual flowers are relatively short-lived, they appear particularly spectacular due to their size, markings, and strong fragrance.
Light: Bright to partial shade with plenty of filtered light. Avoid direct, intense midday sun.
Temperature: Temperate, ideally around 18–25 °C during the day and 13–18 °C at night. A slight drop in temperature at night is beneficial.
Water & Humidity: Water abundantly and regularly during active growth; the substrate should not dry out completely. Water a little more sparingly after the pseudobulbs have matured, but do not provide a pronounced dry rest period. A humidity of around 60–80% with good air circulation is beneficial.
Substrate: Loose, moisture-retaining, yet airy orchid substrate, for example, medium-coarse bark with sphagnum and some perlite. Due to the downward-growing flower spikes, preferably cultivate in an open basket.
