Name: Stanhopea reichenbachiana
Etymology: The genus name Stanhopea honors Philip Henry Stanhope, 4th Earl Stanhope. The specific epithet reichenbachiana is an honorary name commemorating the eminent German orchid botanist Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach.
Origin/Distribution: The Andean region of South America.
Location/Habitat: This species grows epiphytically in moist montane forests. We recommend bright to partially shaded, filtered light, high humidity, and excellent air circulation. Temperate conditions of approximately 13–24 °C during the day and 8–17 °C at night are favorable. During active growth, it should be watered regularly and generously.
Description and Notes: Stanhopea reichenbachiana produces robust pseudobulbs, each with a large, pleated leaf, and downward-growing inflorescences with large, fleshy flowers. We prefer to grow this species in an open basket so the inflorescences can develop freely downward. A coarse, airy substrate that also retains some moisture is ideal. During growth, we water and fertilize regularly, using water that is as soft as possible. Once the new growths have matured, we reduce watering somewhat without allowing the pseudobulbs to shrivel significantly.
