Name: Stanhopea nigripes Rolfe

Etymology: The genus name Stanhopea honors Philip Henry Stanhope; nigripes means “black-footed” or “with a dark foot.”

Origin/Distribution: Andean region of South America.

Location/Habitat: We grow this species under intermediate conditions at around 13–25 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and very good air circulation. During growth, we water it generously and keep the medium consistently slightly moist.

Description and Notes: The species produces robust pseudobulbs with large pleated leaves, as well as downward-growing inflorescences bearing large, fleshy, often fragrant flowers. We therefore prefer to grow it in an open basket. Once the growths have matured, we reduce watering slightly.
