Name: Stanhopea lietzei
Etymology: The genus name Stanhopea honors Philip Henry Stanhope, 4th Earl Stanhope. The species epithet lietzei is a commemorative name.
Origin/Distribution: Brazil.
Location/Habitat: This species grows epiphytically in humid forests. We recommend bright to partially shaded, filtered light, high humidity, and very good air circulation. Temperate to warm conditions of approximately 15–27 °C during the day and 11–19 °C at night are favorable. During active growth, it needs plenty of water and regular feeding.
Description and Notes: Stanhopea lietzei produces pseudobulbs, each with a single large, distinctly pleated leaf, and downward-growing inflorescences with large, fleshy flowers. We grow this species in an open basket so the inflorescences can grow downward through the substrate without obstruction. We use a coarse, very airy substrate that retains some moisture. During growth, we water and fertilize regularly, using the softest water possible. After the growths have matured, the amount of water can be reduced slightly without allowing the plant to dry out completely.
