Name: Stanhopea jenischiana F.Kramer ex Rchb.f.
Etymology: The genus name Stanhopea honors Philip Henry Stanhope, 4th Earl Stanhope. The species epithet jenischiana is a name of honor.
Origin/Distribution: Andean region of northwestern South America.
Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane forests. We recommend bright to partial shade with filtered light, high humidity, and very good air movement. Temperate conditions of approximately 14–25 °C during the day and 9–18 °C at night are favorable. During active growth, it should be watered evenly and generously.
Description and Notes: Stanhopea jenischiana produces robust pseudobulbs, each with a large, pleated leaf. Its striking, fleshy, and often strongly fragrant flowers appear on pendant inflorescences and display contrasting markings. We prefer to grow the species in an open basket so the inflorescences can grow freely downward. A coarse, airy substrate that also retains a little moisture is ideal. During growth, we water and fertilize regularly, using water that is as soft as possible; after the shoots have matured, watering can be reduced somewhat.
