Name: Stanhopea impressa
Etymology: The genus name Stanhopea honors Philip Henry Stanhope, 4th Earl Stanhope. The Latin specific epithet impressa means “pressed in” or “imprinted” and refers to a characteristic feature of the flower.
Origin/Distribution: Andean region of South America.
Location/Habitat: This species grows epiphytically in moist montane forests. We recommend bright to semi-shaded, filtered light, high humidity, and excellent air circulation. Temperate conditions of approximately 14–25 °C during the day and 9–18 °C at night are favorable. During active growth, the plant needs ample water and regular fertilization.
Description and Notes: Stanhopea impressa forms robust pseudobulbs, each with one large, pleated leaf. The fleshy, striking flowers emerge on downward-growing inflorescences and display the complex lip and column structure characteristic of the genus. We prefer to grow this species in an open basket so the inflorescences can develop downward without obstruction. We use a coarse, airy substrate that retains a little moisture, and water regularly during growth, preferably with soft water. Once the growths have matured, watering can be reduced somewhat.
