Name: Stanhopea deltoidea
Etymology: The genus name Stanhopea honors Philip Henry Stanhope, 4th Earl Stanhope. The Latin specific epithet deltoidea means “delta-shaped” or “triangular,” referring to the shape of a characteristic part of the flower.
Origin/Distribution: Tropical South America.
Location/Habitat: This species grows epiphytically in humid tropical to montane forests. We recommend bright to partially shaded, filtered light, high humidity, and excellent air circulation. Intermediate to warm conditions of approximately 15–27 °C during the day and 11–19 °C at night are favorable. During active growth, the plant needs plenty of water and regular feeding.
Description and Notes: Stanhopea deltoidea produces robust pseudobulbs, each with a large, pleated leaf. Its striking, fleshy flowers appear on downward-growing inflorescences and have the complex structure typical of Stanhopea. We prefer to grow this species in an open basket so the inflorescences can grow downward without obstruction. A coarse, airy substrate that also retains some moisture is ideal. During growth, we water and fertilize regularly with water that is as soft as possible; once the new growths have matured, watering can be reduced somewhat.
