Name: Specklinia costaricensis
Etymology: The genus name Specklinia honors the German naturalist Veit Brecher Specklin. The specific epithet costaricensis means “from Costa Rica” and refers to its geographic origin or the location where it was first collected.
Origin/Distribution: Central America.
Location/Habitat: This species grows epiphytically in humid montane forests. We recommend partial shade to bright, indirect light, high humidity, and continuous air movement. Cool to intermediate conditions, with daytime temperatures of approximately 12–24 °C and nighttime temperatures of 8–17 °C, are favorable. The fine roots should be kept consistently slightly moist.
Description and Notes: Specklinia costaricensis is a compact Pleurothallidinae orchid without prominent pseudobulbs. Its small, intricately detailed flowers appear close to the foliage, making the species especially appealing to enthusiasts of botanical miniature orchids. We grow it in a fine, airy orchid mix that retains a little moisture, or mounted in conditions of high humidity. We use soft water whenever possible and avoid letting it dry out completely for extended periods.
