Name: Systeloglossum ecuadorense
Etymology: The genus name Systeloglossum is derived from Greek word elements and refers to the characteristic structure of the flower’s lip. The specific epithet ecuadorense means “from Ecuador” and refers to the species’ country of origin.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in humid montane Andean forests. We recommend bright to partially shaded, filtered light, high humidity, and very good air circulation. Cool-temperate to temperate conditions of approximately 11–23 °C during the day and 7–16 °C at night are favorable.
Description and Notes: Systeloglossum ecuadorense is a compact pseudobulbous orchid with narrow leaves and delicate, many-flowered inflorescences. The small flowers have a complexly structured lip, one of the genus’s characteristic features. We grow the species in a fine to medium, airy orchid substrate that retains a little moisture. During growth, we water regularly with water that is as soft as possible and keep the root system evenly slightly moist. High humidity should always be combined with continuous air circulation.
