Name: Schomburgkia crispa
Origin: Brazil – rocky areas and sunny mountain slopes
Flowering period: Late summer to autumn
Description:
Schomburgkia crispa is a wild-looking orchid with real stage presence. Its robust pseudobulbs, often over half a meter long, bear sturdy, upright leaves. But its true spectacle unfolds during the flowering period: Then it produces imposing, often meter-high inflorescences, covered with numerous fascinating flowers in shades of purple, pink, or bronze. The strikingly ruffled lip – which gives the plant its name "crispa" – lends the plant a dramatic, almost flaming appearance.
The flowers emit a light, spicy-floral scent and open successively over several weeks – an event that will not go unnoticed in any collection.
Care instructions:
This species comes from very bright, drier regions and therefore prefers plenty of light – even direct sun in the morning or evening hours. Temperatures between 20 and 30 °C and moderate humidity (50–70%) are optimal. The substrate should be very airy and well-draining, such as a mixture of coarse bark, pumice, and charcoal. Water and fertilize regularly during the growing season, and keep only slightly moist in winter.
Special feature:
Schomburgkia crispa is more than just an orchid – it is an expression of botanical power. With its wild beauty, gigantic inflorescences, and archaic growth, it brings a piece of untamed nature into the collection. For all who appreciate orchids not just as ornamental plants, but as characters with personality. Exclusively at Ecuagenera Europe.
