Name: Scelochilus langlessei 'yellow Ecuador 2019' × Scelochilus langlessei 'dark'
Etymology: Scelochilus (from the Greek
skelos = leg/thigh and
cheilos = lip, referring to the two-lobed, leg-like outgrowths of the flower lip);
langlessei (named in honor of the French plant collector Eugène Langlassé, who botanized in Colombia and Mexico at the end of the 19th century).
Origin / Distribution: Cultivar (intraspecific cross). The species
Scelochilus langlessei is native to the humid montane cloud forests of South America (particularly Colombia and Ecuador).
Growing conditions / Habitat: Epiphytic. After deflasking, requires intermediate to cool conditions, shaded to partially shaded light (no direct, intense sun), consistently high humidity of approximately 75–85%, and continuous, gentle air circulation.
Description & Notes: This intentional sibling cross (
sibling cross) combines two exceptional color forms of
Scelochilus langlessei (syn.
Comparettia langlessei). The parent 'yellow Ecuador 2019' is distinguished by its rare, bright yellow base color, while the partner 'dark' contributes intensely dark, reddish-purple color segments. The seedlings promise delicate miniature plants with pendent to arching inflorescences. Their inheritable floral traits suggest a fascinating range of variation in the characteristic tubular or spur-shaped flowers—from warm yellow and orange tones to deep, contrastingly striped shades of purple and violet. Due to their origin in humid habitats, once deflasked the seedlings are ideally suited to growing in display cases or terrariums, or mounted on cork/tree fern root with a moist moss base.
