Name: Scaphyglottis prolifera
Etymology: The genus name Scaphyglottis is composed of Greek word elements meaning “boat” and “tongue,” referring to the shape of the lip. The Latin specific epithet prolifera means “producing abundant offspring” and refers to the characteristic growth habit, in which new shoots can develop on or from older shoots.
Origin/Distribution: The species is widespread in tropical America.
Location/Habitat: It grows predominantly as an epiphyte in humid forests, from lowland to montane elevations. We recommend bright, filtered light, moderate to high humidity, and good air circulation. Temperate to warm conditions of approximately 17–29 °C during the day and 12–21 °C at night are favorable. Water regularly during active growth.
Description and Notes: Scaphyglottis prolifera has an unusual, tiered growth habit, as new shoots often emerge from the tips of older shoots. Over time, this produces dense, branching plants. The small flowers appear singly or in small groups. We grow the species in a loose, airy orchid mix or mounted, and water it regularly with water that is as soft as possible. We take care to avoid waterlogging.
