Name: Scaphyglottis graminifolia
Etymology: The genus name Scaphyglottis is composed of Greek word elements meaning “boat” or “skiff” and “tongue,” referring to the shape of the lip. The specific epithet graminifolia means “grass-leaved” and describes the narrow, grass-like leaves.
Origin/Distribution: Tropical America.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in humid tropical to montane forests. We recommend bright, filtered light, moderate to high humidity, and good air movement. Temperate to warm-temperate conditions of approximately 16–27 °C during the day and 11–20 °C at night are favorable. The roots should receive moisture regularly but remain well aerated.
Description and Notes: Scaphyglottis graminifolia produces slender, closely spaced shoots with narrow leaves and small, delicate flowers. As it matures, the plant can form dense clumps. We grow it in a fine to medium-grade, airy orchid substrate or mounted, provided humidity is sufficiently high. We water regularly with water that is as soft as possible and allow the root zone to dry slightly between waterings.
