Description

Restrepia dodsonii

Name: Restrepia dodsonii Luer

Etymology: The genus name Restrepia honors José Restrepo; dodsonii honors the American botanist and orchid researcher Calaway H. Dodson.

First described: 1980 by Carlyle A. Luer.

Origin/Distribution: The species is native to Ecuador.

Location/Habitat: We cultivate Restrepia dodsonii in cool to intermediate conditions at approximately 13–23 °C, with high humidity, bright filtered light, and gentle air movement. We keep the fine, airy substrate evenly slightly moist.

Description and Notes: This compact Restrepia produces striking flowers, whose coloration can vary from dark purple to spotted purple-red tones. Well-established shoots can bloom repeatedly. The species is very well suited for a display case or a tempered greenhouse.
