Name: Porrovallia Monica
Parents: Masdevallia veitchiana × Porroglossum echidna
Registration: Registered on July 31, 1996, by Ray Thomson in the RHS International Orchid Register; Ray Thomson is also credited as the originator.
Location/Cultivation Conditions: We recommend cool to intermediate temperatures of around 12–22 °C, with significantly cooler nights, shade to moderately bright filtered light, high humidity, and a steady gentle air movement. A fine, airy, and moisture-retaining potting medium should be kept evenly lightly moist. Soft water is beneficial; complete drying out and waterlogging should be avoided.
Description and Notes: Porrovallia Monica combines the larger, more open flower form and the bright orange to golden tones of Masdevallia veitchiana with the compact growth, multiple flowers, and mobile lip of Porroglossum echidna. The golden-yellow flowers can have a deep dark red lip and appear singly or sequentially on the inflorescence. Old flower spikes should only be removed once they have completely dried out.
