Name: Prosthechea sceptra
Etymology: The genus name Prosthechea is derived from Greek and refers to a structure of the flower column. The specific epithet sceptra means “scepter” and alludes to the upright, stately appearance of the plant or its inflorescence.
Origin/Distribution: Andean region of South America.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in humid montane forests. We recommend bright to partially shaded, filtered light, high humidity, and good air movement. Cool-temperate to temperate conditions of approximately 12–24 °C during the day and 8–17 °C at night are favorable.
Description and Notes: Prosthechea sceptra is a pseudobulbous epiphytic orchid with leathery leaves and upright inflorescences. The flowers have a prominent lip and the characteristic structure of the genus. We grow the species in a coarse, airy, and very well-draining orchid substrate. During active growth, we water regularly with water that is as soft as possible and allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Good air movement is especially important when humidity is high.
