Name: Porroglossum josei
Etymology: The genus name Porroglossum refers to the distinctive shape of the flower’s lip, which is movable in species of this genus. The specific epithet josei is an honorific.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in moist montane Andean forests. We recommend partial shade to bright, diffused light, high humidity, and excellent air movement. Cool to temperate conditions of approximately 10–22 °C during the day and 6–15 °C at night are favorable. The fine root system should be kept evenly and slightly moist.
Description and Notes: Porroglossum josei is a small Pleurothallidinae orchid with short ramicauls, single leaves, and delicate inflorescences. Like other species in the genus, it has a movable lip that exhibits a remarkable hinged mechanism. We grow the species in a fine, airy substrate that retains a little moisture, or mount it in conditions of high humidity. We water regularly with water that is as soft as possible, avoid letting the roots dry out completely, and ensure continuous air movement.
