Porroglossum echidna

Name: Porroglossum echidna (Rchb.f.) Garay

Etymology: The genus name Porroglossum refers to the distinctive shape of the mobile lip; echidna alludes to the spiny appearance of characteristic floral parts.

Origin/Distribution: Andean region of northwestern South America.

Location/Habitat: We grow this species in cool to intermediate conditions at around 9–22 °C, with very high humidity, diffuse light, and continuous air movement. We keep the fine roots evenly and slightly moist.

Description and Notes: This small-growing Pleurothallidinae produces short ramicauls, single leaves, and delicate inflorescences. Its mobile lip, which can respond to touch, is particularly distinctive. A fine, airy, moisture-retentive medium or mounted culture works well.
