Description

Polystachya bella

Name: Polystachya bella Kraenzl.

Etymology: The genus name Polystachya means “many-spiked”; the Latin bella means “beautiful” and refers to the attractive flowers.

First described: In 1926 by Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Kraenzlin.

Origin/Distribution: Kenya and Uganda.

Location/Habitat: Epiphytic in humid East African mountain forests. Grow in cool to intermediate conditions at around 13–24 °C, in partial shade, with high humidity and good ventilation.

Description and notes: A small to medium-sized, clump-forming orchid with closely packed pseudobulbs and upright, often branched inflorescences. The non-resupinate, waxy flowers display bright yellow to golden-orange hues. Keep evenly moist during growth; an airy substrate and steady air movement help prevent rot.
