Name: Specklinia corniculata (Sw.) Mutel

Synonyms: Epidendrum corniculatum; Dendrobium corniculatum; Cymbidium corniculatum; Pleurothallis corniculata; Specklinia barboselloides; Specklinia emarginata; Specklinia pyrsodes

Etymology: The epithet corniculata comes from Latin and means “with small horns”; it refers to the horn-like appearance of the flower structures.

First description: The species was described by Olof Swartz in 1788 as Epidendrum corniculatum. The currently accepted combination, Specklinia corniculata, was published in 1837.

Origin / Habitat: From Central America to northern South America, as well as Cuba and Haiti. It grows epiphytically in humid tropical forests, usually at low to mid elevations.

Description & Notes: A small, clump-forming miniature orchid with single orange flowers on slender inflorescences. We grow it in bright to lightly shaded conditions, with good air movement and regular moisture, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. We keep it warm to intermediate, at about 18–26 °C.
