Name: Platystele baqueroi L.Jost & Iturralde
Etymology: The genus name Platystele refers to the broad column of the flower. The epithet baqueroi honors the Ecuadorian orchid researcher Luis Baquero.
First described by: Lou Jost and Gabriel Iturralde, 2017.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador and Colombia.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic in very moist montane and cloud forests, at approximately 680 to 1,080 m. The species prefers shade, over 80% humidity, steady gentle air movement, and intermediate temperatures of approximately 15–24 °C.
Description and notes: This miniature stork orchid forms dense clumps of short shoots, each with a single small leaf. The tiny flowers have strikingly elongated, finely ciliate sepals. We prefer to grow it mounted with a small amount of sphagnum or in a very fine, airy substrate that never dries out completely. A well-ventilated display case provides suitable conditions.
