Name: Phragmipedium × pfitzerianum O.Gruss
Parents: Phragmipedium longifolium × Phragmipedium warszewiczianum
Etymology: The genus name Phragmipedium combines Greek words for “partition” and “shoe,” referring to the fan-shaped ovary and shoe-shaped lip. The epithet pfitzerianum honors the German botanist and orchid researcher Ernst Hugo Heinrich Pfitzer.
First description: Olaf Gruss, 2013, in the OrchideenJournal.
Origin/distribution: This natural hybrid is known from Ecuador.
Location/habitat: The parents grow in moist tropical habitats. Intermediate temperatures of approximately 15–25°C, bright filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation are suitable.
Description and notes: Phragmipedium × pfitzerianum combines the robust, long-leaved growth of Phragmipedium longifolium with the long, often twisted petals of Phragmipedium warszewiczianum. We keep the airy, moisture-retaining substrate evenly moist and avoid prolonged dry periods. Low-calcium water is beneficial.
