Description

Phragmipedium besseae 'Limon'

Name: Phragmipedium besseae 'Limon'

Synonym: Paphiopedilum besseae

Etymology: The genus name Phragmipedium derives from the Greek phragma (“division, partition”) and pedion (“shoe”). The epithet besseae honors Elizabeth Locke Besse.

First description: The species was described in 1981 by Calaway H. Dodson and Janet Kuhn.

Origin / Habitat: Southern Ecuador to northern Peru, at approximately 1100–1500 m. It grows lithophytically or terrestrially in moist habitats and near streams.

Description & Notes: A compact, stem-forming slipper orchid with narrow leaves and flowers that appear in succession. The 'Limon' form has yellowish to lime-colored flowers. We keep it evenly moist, with good air circulation and bright, indirect light. We grow it at around 15–27 °C.
