Name: Paphiopedilum spicerianum (Rchb.f.) Pfitzer
Synonyms: Cypripedium spicerianum Rchb.f.
Etymology: Paphiopedilum combines Paphos, a place associated with Aphrodite, with the Greek word for "slipper"; spicerianum honors the British orchid enthusiast Henry Spicer.
Origin/Distribution: Northeastern India and adjacent parts of the eastern Himalayas.
Location/Habitat: Terrestrial or lithophytic orchid of humus-rich, well-drained sites in humid mountain forests. Cultivate in partial shade, with good air circulation, at approximately 14–25 °C. Keep the fine to medium substrate consistently slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
Description and Notes: Paphiopedilum spicerianum forms compact fans of narrow green leaves. The usually solitary flower has a large white dorsal sepal with green and purple markings, lateral petals, and a darker shoe-shaped lip. Consistent moisture, low-calcium water, and regular fresh air promote healthy roots.
