Description

Paphinia neudeckeri

Name: Paphinia neudeckeri

Etymology: The genus name Paphinia refers to Paphos in Cyprus, a place closely associated with Aphrodite in classical mythology. The specific epithet neudeckeri is a patronymic.

Origin/Distribution: Tropical South America.

Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in very moist tropical forests. We recommend partial shade to bright, strongly filtered light, high humidity, and continuous air movement. Tempered to warm conditions of approximately 16–27 °C during the day and 12–20 °C at night are favorable. The root system should remain evenly slightly moist.

Description and Notes: Paphinia neudeckeri is a pseudobulbous orchid with folded leaves. The striking flowers appear on mostly pendulous inflorescences, which is why cultivation in a basket or in a pot with enough free space for the inflorescences is particularly suitable. We use a loose, airy, yet moisture-retaining orchid substrate and water regularly with as soft water as possible. The roots should not dry out completely, while at the same time we avoid waterlogging. High humidity should always be combined with very good air movement.
