Name: Paphinia litensis
Etymology: The genus name Paphinia refers to Paphia, an epithet of Aphrodite. The specific epithet litensis refers to Lita in northwestern Ecuador and thus to the geographical origin of the species.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: The species grows epiphytically in very moist forests of the western Andean region. We recommend partial shade to bright, filtered light, high humidity, and good air circulation. Warm-temperate conditions of approximately 17–27 °C during the day and 13–20 °C at night are favorable. The root system should receive moisture regularly without remaining constantly wet.
Description and Notes: Paphinia litensis forms pseudobulbs with folded leaves and attractive, mostly downward-facing inflorescences. The large flowers show the striking shape and markings typical of Paphinia. We cultivate the species in an airy, slightly moisture-retaining orchid substrate. A hanging basket is particularly practical so that the inflorescences can develop freely. We water regularly during active growth with as soft water as possible and slightly reduce watering after new shoots have matured.
